God opens and closes doors in our lives quite often. It is tough to see if the enemy is setting an obstacle or if God is blocking that path. The truth lies in Christ, so we can always be certain about one thing: no matter what the situation, God wants us to seek Him through those changes in life.
Change is good, but we can all admit there are times in our lives where we just want things to stay the way they are – or to go back to the way they used to be. We want this because it’s easy. Unfortunately, when life is easier, so is the tendency to control our own lives.
Change is an opportunity for us to grow closer with Christ. Take Joseph, for example. Being taken away from his family and placed in a prison was not something he planned on doing. In fact, he had dreams that his brothers would bow down to him. Rather than dwelling in his fear of the unknown and controlling his life, he seized this change as an opportunity to listen to God’s direction. God’s purpose for that change was to lead Joseph into becoming second-in-command to Pharaoh to prevent a famine in Egypt. God can do miraculous things through change.
Remember, though, that we don’t always need to change. Sometimes it’s good to stand firm in your actions and what you believe, especially if you are obeying the Lord and His instructions for you. However, having an attitude unreceptive to any change at all is an attitude of pride and stubbornness.
When the unknown sets in with fear, Christ is ready to help. He provides perfect guidance through seasons of change. He offers us something that we will never have: the ability to remain constant. The Lord gives us the consistency that humans desire. God never changes – God is always constant. As Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (NIV)
