Easter Baskets: Alumni support local community

For the twelfth year, the Northeast Indiana Alumni Directors Consortium (NIADC) is seeking wrapped Easter baskets to be given to the children of SCAN clients SCAN stands for Stop Child Abuse and Neglect. The organization serves thousands of children throughout the Fort Wayne region.

SCAN is an organization created to eliminate the abuse and neglect of children through family services, education and community partnerships. Rick Carder, the Director of Alumni Relations at Indiana Wesleyan University has been participating in this effort and has been looking forward to this fifth year of contributing. Carder states that “last year, we were able to give over 1,500 Easter baskets to children through SCAN.”

With the partnership of the Alumni Association and the IWU staff of the Regional Education Center, IWU is able to provide many baskets. It is exciting for students of the College of Adult and Professional Studies to participate. Becoming involved with this activity would be great for families, church groups, your office, scout troops, and more.

Ten Fort Wayne area colleges and universities join forces each Easter to collect more than 1,500 baskets for these children. “With the partnership of the Alumni Association and the IWU staff of the Regional Education Center,” says Carder, “IWU is able to provide many baskets.”

Make a donation to support this worthy effort today. Contact Rick Carder, Alumni Relations Director at 765-677-2110. The baskets must be commercially packaged (nothing homemade) and your entire basket should be wrapped so that nothing falls out.

Nathan Smith, Administrative Assistant, invites alumni. “We hope to have many join us at the IWU Spirit Night at the Chick-fil-A.” Chick-fil-A at Jefferson Pointe in Fort Wayne the benefactor. The IWU Spirit Night is March 20th from 5-7 PM. Proceeds benefit SCAN, a worthwhile effort.

Please join me in the following responsive prayer.

Rescue and Restoration
All: O Lord, We pray for the rescue and restoration of the countless number of people who have become victims of sexual trafficking
and commercial sexual exploitation.

Umfundisi :We pray….:
• for an end to their exploitation and sexual abuse;
• for as many safe and secure shelters as are needed to provide for their physical needs;
• for loving caretakers to provide comfort, solace, and a sense of family;
• for training and education to provide these persons with meaningful and productive livelihoods;
• for medical treatment to meet their many health concerns;
• for the Gospel message to reach their ears and be received in their hearts.

Breakdown of the Sex Industry
All: O Lord, we pray for the breakdown of the sex industry
which fuels sex trafficking and commercial
sexual exploitation of persons:

Umfundisi: We pray for….
• the demise of the pornography industry;
• a ban on internet pornography and sex tourism internet sites;
• for the closure of strip clubs;
• strong law enforcement efforts the world over to enforce obscenity laws, fight corruption, and to arrest and convict the traffickers and “customers”;
• we pray for the permanent closure of brothels.

Reduction of Demand
All: O Lord we Pray for efforts to reduce the demand for
commercial sex:

Umfundisi :We pray for….
• the defeat of attempts to legalize prostitution in countries around the world;
• the overturn of laws that legalized prostitution in the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand and certain districts of Australia;
• for the repeal of legalized in-door prostitution in Rhode Island, and the repeal of legalized prostitution in portions of Nevada;
• for the success and development of ministries which help people
plagued with sexual addictions;
• for counter-cultural movements opposing the normalization of pimping and prostitution;
• for God to convict the hearts of traffickers, pimps and the “customers” and to transformtheir lives, as in the example of John Newton who turned from his life as a slave trader after coming to the faith.

Development
All: O Lord, we Pray for the development of impoverished
nations so that the peoples in such countries may know a decent standard of living, have meaningful education and employment opportunities, and thus escape the desperate circumstances that
make people vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking.

World Leaders
All: O Lord, we Pray for world leaders, that they will
confront sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation by dedicating their time and energy and national resources
to eradicating it.

The Church
All: O Lord, we Pray for the church and its response to
sex trafficking and commercial sexual
exploitation:

Umfundisi: We pray…

• for the strength, fortitude, and vision of Christians working to address this issue.

For a new semester
Umfundisi: Dear Lord:
We are here today as it were, between the past and the future, a past semester still fresh in our memories and a new semester radiant with the hues of hope and imagination.
Be with our university and college trustees, administrators, faculty, staff and our student as we begin this new semester. Grant our students patience to study, openness to learn, and energy to take care of themselves by living balanced lives in You. Guide each of them to grow more deeply in Your love.
All: O Lord,
Grant each of us your strength, so we will have courage in every situation;
Grant each of us your love, so we will never give up on anybody;
Grant each of us your wisdom, so we will show others the path to success;
Grant each of us your mercy, so we will forgive those who hurt us;
Grant each of us your vision, so we will find the best in everybody;
Grant each of us your hope, so we will never give up;
Grant each of us your joy, so we will be thankful for all the blessings and privileges You have showered upon us;
And Grant us your grace to succeed in You this semester. Amen

IWU Chorale video goes viral over YouTube

The following article is from the Huffington Post –
Huffington Post UK

When you’re stuck in a plane, waiting for it to take off, there’s precious little to keep you amused. iPods, phones and so on are banned, the in-flight entertainment can’t be used just yet… what are you meant to do, read something?

Well, exactly. That’s never going to happen.

Praise be to Indiana Wesleyan University Chorale then, for delighting a plane full of startled travellers as a maintenence check was being performed on their aircraft early last year.

Led by choirmaster Dr. Todd Guy, they sing Fernando Ortega’s ‘Give Me Jesus’ while jaws drop around them.

What makes it especially amazing is when certain portions of the plane suddenly join in, when you thought they were just staring on in awe too.

Of course, YouTube commenters beneath the original video – uploaded by YouTuber AutoPilot11, by the way – have started a “Does God exist?” tit-for-tat battle, but by us, it’s just a pretty awesome clip. Simple as that, really.

Audrey Jones appointed to Mayor’s Office, Muncie

Excerpt from Muncie Press – http://www.munciefreepress.com/node/25022

MUNCIE, IN – Mayor-elect Dennis Tyler relied on experience and an established law firm headed by Jack Quirk to round out his new city hall team that will take office Jan. 1.

“I have to apologize for the majority of these appointment cannot be here today,” said Tyler. “They are working for a living someplace.”

The surprises include Audrey Jones, 30, deputy clerk treasurer at Yorktown, and Sarah Beach, 47, a substitute teacher who worked at the old Indiana Gas Co., and more recently at Jarden. Jones is the new city controller and Beach will be human resources director at city hall. The staff accountant at Cornerstone Center for the Arts, Kelley Harless, will join her former boss, Terry Whitt Bailey, as assistant Community Development director charged with accounting for millions in federal entitlement funds. Bailey was Cornerstone director before running the Madame Walker Theater in Indianapolis, and then coming back to run Community Development for Tyler.

Jones has a master’s in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, an undergraduate degree from Northwood University, and associate degree in accounting from Ivy Tech Community College. She has worked 11 years for Town Clerk-Treasurer Beth Neff, handling the budget, payroll, account receivables, and other accounting work. “I think this is a great opportunity,” said Jones, whose resignation was announced to the town council this week.

“Audrey has the experience necessary in government accounting procedures,” said. Tyler.
