Brushstrokes: Michael Matti and the Indiana Bicentennial Relay

Michael Matti is known nationally for his photography. He is a 2013 IWU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Photography. Originally from Indonesia, he now lives in Seattle, Washington. He practices his 10497124_10204730686126949_2443053335294817858_ophotography full-time. Matti has shifted from commercial photography to weddings and now he shoots mainly adventure and travel photography.

“IWU helped me discover my passion for photography,” said Matti. He was completely new to photography when he entered the major, and settled on it after switching four times. Currently, he puts what he was taught to good use by capturing beautiful landscapes. He has an eye for sunsets, mountains, and forests. Matti has done work for Camelbak, The Outbound Collective, and many more companies. He keeps a blog on his website, www.michaelmatti.com, about his travels.

Matti believes the people in his major became some of his closest friends. “I had a great time at IWU. One of my biggest memories is all the hours spent in the dark room with my fellow Photography majors,” he stated.

Social media is one of Matti’s biggest platforms for sharing the Gospel. He typically shares his pictures along with Bible verses. He said, “You never know who is reading and this lets people know I am a Christian, which opens doors for when I travel with others.” One of Matti’s photographs of a classic Indiana sunset and cornfield was recently chosen to be shown on the Bicentennial stamp for the state of Indiana.

indiana-bicentennialThe Indiana Bicentennial Relay will travel across Indiana and the downtown Marion rally gathering will feature Michael Matti’s Bicentennial Stamp as the torch passes by along with music and speaker that feature the IWU Jazz Ensemble and Masters Praise. The rally will be held on September 28 throughout the afternoon.

The Bicentennial Relay will pass by the IWU Marion Campus (Adams Street) between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 28. Spectators should gather near the east entrance (Adams Street) as the procession passes by.

Brushstrokes: Maggie Hubbard – Finding Herself as a Painter in Seattle

Maggie Hubbard graduated from Indiana Wesleyan in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Illustration. She questioned whether art was a good path for her. She was uncertain if art would result in something she pursued as needed or as a career. Hubbard’s love for painting and art led her to make it a career. She is still, however, working to refine her technique and style as an artist. She continues to discover more about her craft as she goes on.

Upon graduation, her father passed away suddenly. She believes that this has been a catalyst for her paintings ever since. “My dad was a painter himself, and I just reflected on his life. I really had no doubts about being an artist,” she said. Hubbard paints work based on her father and things that remind her of him. She paints stacks of books and papers in all shapes and sizes, plants, her dad’s office, chair, or even his glasses. Hubbard captures simple things that remind her of her father and the artist he was. Her style is contemporary painting.

Hubbard lives in Seattle with two of her close friends, and works as a church secretary. However, she spends all of her free time feeding her creative side. She continues to dig into the painter that her father was and grow as the painter God has called her to be.
She has been featured in Wesleyan Life Magazine, Journal of Patient Experience, and IWU’s very own Caesura Literary Magazine. Galleries like Hammon Arts Center, Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, and IWU’s 1920 gallery have featured her work.
