Michael Miller received his certificated in Religious Studies from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2014. He also received a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing 2014 and a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management 2016. “Indiana Wesleyan created an extremely positive and nurturing environment for me as a student,” Miller shared. “The support staff was always very helpful and the instructors always gave very corrective and timely feedback. It is one thing to be told you need to make improvements, but it is a completely different situation to have an instructor show you your mistakes and then give you ideas on how to correct them. This is the environment created for you at IWU.”

One reason Miller picked IWU was because of the online courses. “When I was a senior in High School, a college recruiter came to speak to us, and he asked us a question that has stuck with me ever since. He said, ‘Close to half of the college students are majoring in a business related field, what are you going to do to set yourself apart from everyone else?’ I thought about this for a very long time, and I decided that I was not going to trade experience for education or vice versa. I decided that I was going to earn a degree while at the same time building my professional experience. This way when I graduated, I would have a lot of time with an organization as well as a degree. Indiana Wesleyan gave me the opportunity to fulfill this dream,” Miller shared.

Now, Miller is the Human Resource Advisor for Region 47 Speedway LLC. He is responsible for 115 stores in the Eastern half of Indiana. “IWU gave me the knowledge and skills to give the advice needed to assist the store I am responsible for,” Miller said. “Being in a support role for our stores, it is vital that I am able to give accurate and timely information so that our stores can make the most informed decisions possible. Attending IWU gave me these skills, and choosing on-line courses gave me the time management that I use in my position, daily.”

Miller shared some advice for current IWU students. “The fastest and easiest way to become successful is to seek a company that is the right fit for you and your goals. Do not be blinded by a salary or the image of a company when researching positions. Always look deeper than a Google search or a website and find the organization that will best fit your beliefs. For me that organization was Speedway. Speedway is a company that is an extremely stable organization that has grown tremendously over the last 5 years and is still growing at a rapid speed. I can say with absolute honesty that I have never seen an organization that  is so dedicated to the success of their people, both personally and professionally. This is an organization that has figured out that if you take care of your people, the rest will fall into place.”
