Dean for the School of Nursing

It gives me great pleasure to announce that after much careful
deliberation and consultation, Dr. Barbara Ihrke has been offered and
accepted the position of Dean for the IWU School of Nursing.

The past two years have brought great achievements for nursing education
at IWU. The faculty and staff of our nursing programs have successfully
completed their ten-year accreditation reaffirmation. They are
continuing their trajectory of growth in quality and in enrollment
numbers. And they are moving successfully through the process of
forming themselves into a united and cohesive School. Through this
time, Dr. Barbara Ihrke has served as Executive Director for the new
School, and has helped to complete an enormous amount of work in a very
short time, and she has served as a catalyst for change.

Over the past several months it has become increasingly clear that Dr.
Ihrke is the person best-prepared to lead the new IWU School of Nursing
forward. Last week I met with the faculty and staff of the School of
Nursing to ask for their input into the leadership decision. Their
responses have been overwhelmingly supportive and complimentary of Dr.
Ihrke.

Dr. Barbara Ihrke has taught nursing at IWU since 1994. She received
her R.N. degree from St. Cloud School of Nursing and holds a Bachelor of
Science from Crown College, Master of Science from Indiana Wesleyan
University and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Her areas of expertise
include transcultural nursing, tropical health, gerontology, and nursing
informatics. She is a research consultant at Marion General Hospital and
a home health nurse. From 1980-1991 she worked in the Democratic
Republic of Congo as a missionary nurse teaching in a school of nursing
and doing primary health care projects. She spent her sabbatical in
Gabon, Africa. Dr. Ihrke has presented her transcultural research at
various national and international conferences. Research areas include
cultural competence of students and nurses as well as spiritual care
issues. Being Uncomfortable: A Transcultural Nursing Experience evolved
from her work with junior nursing students. She is published in Teaching
and Nursing: A Guide for Faculty (Billings and Halstead). Informatics
across the curriculum is an area of interest and writing.

We look forward to a special "grand opening" event for the School of
Nursing to take place later this semester at which we will install Dr.
Ihrke and the School of Nursing Chairs. This will be our chance to
publicly introduce the School to our state, the CCCU, and our own
community.

I would particularly like to thank the search committee members who
worked with me through the search process. I also publicly thank the
faculty and staff of the School of Nursing for their vision, dedication
to IWU and the School of Nursing, and their strong support during this
critical process. It is my conviction that Dr. Ihrke is well prepared
to give leadership to our IWU School of Nursing. Please join me in
praying that she will have God's special wisdom, insight, and courage to
lead this School to the next level of excellence and outreach that God
has planned for us to achieve.

Sincerely,
David Wright

U.S. nursing student amazed at Korean bedside manners

2010-08-23 17:18

The patients at Daejeon Sun Hospital had their minds taken off the pain by the blond hair and blue eyes of a nursing student from the U.S. last week.

Stephanie Wiegert is a senior at Indiana Wesleyan. As part of her academic studies in nursing, her Transcultural Nursing-Practicum has brought her all the way to the hospital in Daejeon about 150km south of Seoul.

“The goal is really to become aware of different cultural backgrounds and how to competently care for patients from other cultures,” said Wiegert.

Although she accomplished her goal to learn about culturally competent and sensitive care, what she really wanted to take back with her to the U.S. was just how far Korean bedside manners went.

“I love the hospitality and just the friendliness of people in general especially at Sun Hospital,” said Wiegert.

“With the patients they’re (nurse) just always smiling and friendly.”

“I really like the attitude that people have toward patients.”

She also said that the amount of respect that people had for one another, both professionally and culturally, was also a learning experience.

Since the purpose of this practicum was to take back to the U.S. her knowledge and experience, she said that the U.S. had a lot to learn from Korea in terms of hospitality.

“People in the states aren’t necessarily always that friendly and helpful and I would say that the majority of people I met here have been that way, so I would love to take that back,” she said.

“I feel like sometimes in the states, not all people, but there are a lot of grumpy nurses and doctors out there.”

Kim Young-don, director of foreign relations at Daejeon Sun Hospital, said that treating patients politely is considered first at the hospital.

Although Wiegert learned the most about proper bedside manners, her primary focus is multicultural awareness.

“It’s very important especially in the states right now with such an influx of people from other countries, backgrounds and cultures that as a nurse you should provide culturally competent and sensitive care.”

Without such multicultural awareness, professionals can be confronted with situations that throw them off guard.

“There have been a few instances already in my clinic in the states where you have somebody from another culture and you don’t know the best way to take care of them, or you make them feel uncomfortable.”

Wiegert’s initial expectations of Korea were quickly thwarted when she entered the country.

“What I thought before I came was that it (Korea) might be somewhat underdeveloped in the healthcare area, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are a lot of similarities to the healthcare in the states,” said Wiegert.

Kim said that Wiegert was impressed at the quality of Korean healthcare considering how cheap it is.

Overall, Wiegert said that she not only would come back again, but that she didn’t want to leave.

“I would love to come back and work. I’m sure there are areas with underprivileged children in need,” said Wiegert.

She plans to return to Indiana Wesleyan and recommend Korea to her peers.

“I think it’s an invaluable experience to come to another culture and learn, especially because everybody here is very welcoming.”

Kim said that he was more than willing to accommodate more U.S. students in the future.

IWU Graduation – August 14th

Graduation at IWU – Alumni Volunteers are appreciated!

Isn’t summertime in Indiana wonderful?  Sipping the fresh lemonade, fresh cut grass, tomatoes ripening on the vines and another graduating class at IWU!

That’s right – our newest graduates will cross the stage of the new Chapel Auditorium on Saturday, August 14th! This graduation will include our own Lonnie Vandeventer, AGS Alumni Director, who will be receiving his MBA in Applied Management.

Volunteers commit to a two-hour time commitment and with two graduations at 10 AM and 2 PM, it is all hands on deck. Their time commitments will be 8:00-10:00 AM and/or 12:00-2:00 PM respectively.

Interested in helping? Mark your calendar now and notify us of your ability to help. Training and supervision will be required. A complimentary lunch will be provided to all alumni volunteers starting at 11:15 AM in Baldwin. Please plan to meet us at the entrance to Baldwin to receive your complimentary meal and we will all dine together in the Teter CafĂ©.

Volunteer participation helps to make this a day all our alumni will remember! We appreciate you all very much.
